Wabtec to modernise 60 locomotives for CN

North American rail firm CN has introduced an order to boost 60 locomotives via Wabtec Company’s modernisation programme. 

The rail operator will see 60 of its licensed pre-owned Sprint-9 locomotives modernised by Wabtec, which can remodel them from DC to AC-powered traction, improve the engines and set up a set of digital upgrades. 

The modernisation order is a part of CN’s sustainability targets because it goals to scale back its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 43% per gross tonne mile by 2030, in comparison with 2019 ranges and attain web zero emissions by 2050. 

CN vice-president of mechanical Mark Grubbs stated: “Modernising these locomotives cost-effectively improves the reliability of our present fleet and contributes to decreasing our rail carbon footprint. 

“Along with decreasing the environmental influence of our personal operations, it helps us to scale back the greenhouse gasoline emissions of our clients.” 

The locomotives will probably be put in with digital options, corresponding to Journey Optimiser – a sensible cruise-control system and LOCOTROL Distributed Energy – a management and communication system that allows coordinated braking and traction energy distribution. 

CN says that the upgrades are focusing on an 18% enchancment in gasoline effectivity, a 40% improve in reliability and a 55% improve in pulling energy.
